Buick Nailhead V8 Pro Series Ready to Run Distributor

The TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run Distributor for the Buick Nailhead V8 brings precise, adjustable ignition performance to the full Nailhead family — 264 CID (4.3L), 322 CID (5.3L), 364 CID (6.0L), 401 CID (6.6L), and 425 CID (7.0L) — in carbureted applications spanning the entire 1953–1966 Nailhead production era. Built on a machined aluminum housing with a circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger, this distributor delivers accurate, repeatable ignition timing without points, condenser, or a separate ignition control box.

Counter-clockwise rotation: The Buick Nailhead V8 runs a counter-clockwise distributor rotation — the opposite of most domestic V8 engines. This affects rotor phasing and spark plug wire routing and must be accounted for during installation. Verify your firing order and plug wire layout for counter-clockwise rotation before finalizing installation.

Unlike an HEI design, the Pro Series uses an external ignition coil, giving you flexibility to run a coil matched to your specific build. A minimum coil output of 35,000 volts is required — coil is not included. The magnetic pickup trigger eliminates points and condenser wear entirely. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included, allowing the mechanical advance curve to be tuned to your Nailhead's camshaft profile, compression ratio, and carburetor calibration. A vacuum advance block-off plate is included for performance and race applications. A tachometer output extension cable is included for straightforward aftermarket tach wiring.

The Buick Nailhead is a legendary powerplant in American hot rod and custom culture — the 401 and 425 especially have long histories in early drag racing, lakester builds, and custom street applications. Whether you're restoring a first-generation Riviera, rebuilding a '65 Wildcat, refreshing a 1950s Roadmaster or Century, or running a Nailhead in a hot rod project, the Pro Series Ready-to-Run provides the advance tunability and precision that a stock points distributor cannot deliver.

The Buick Nailhead V8 — Production Era and Why Ignition Matters
The Buick Nailhead V8 was produced from 1953 through 1966, spanning five distinct displacements from the early 264 CID through the final 425 CID big-block. Named for its distinctive small vertical valves that resemble nailheads, the engine powered the full range of Buick's lineup during its era — from the Century and Special to the Roadmaster, Electra, LeSabre, Wildcat, and the iconic first-generation Riviera. The 401 and 425 became cornerstones of early drag racing and hot rod culture, and the Nailhead remains one of the most sought-after American V8 engines for vintage builds, customs, and restorations.
Factory points distributors on these engines are now sixty-plus years old in many cases. Points wear, timing drifts, and ignition reliability degrades — problems that compound on performance builds running modified camshafts or aftermarket carburetors. The Pro Series Ready-to-Run addresses all of these issues with a magnetic pickup trigger that holds timing accurately without maintenance and an adjustable advance curve that a stock points system cannot provide.

Performance Benefit
The circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger deliver precise, repeatable spark timing without the wear and drift that accumulates with points contact over time. Three advance bushings and four advance springs allow the mechanical advance curve to be customized for your specific Nailhead combination — particularly valuable on performance builds where factory advance timing is not optimal. A vacuum advance block-off plate is included for race and dedicated performance builds where full timing control is preferred through mechanical advance only. The tachometer output extension cable simplifies wiring an aftermarket electronic tachometer without additional adapters.
