Buick Odd Fire V6 HEI Distributor Long Shaft - Black

The TSP HEI Distributor for the Buick 90° odd-fire V6 is a self-contained large-cap HEI ignition upgrade covering both the Dauntless 225 CID (3.7L) V6 used in 1966–1971 Jeep applications and the 231 CID (3.8L) odd-fire V6 used in 1975–1977 Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac passenger car applications. The integrated HEI design combines the ignition coil, ignition module, cap, and rotor into a single unit with a single 12-volt connection — no external coil, ignition box, condenser, or points required.

The 65,000-volt internal HEI coil delivers substantially stronger spark output than a factory points-style distributor, supporting easier cold starts, cleaner idle quality, and more consistent ignition performance across the RPM range. A magnetic pickup trigger replaces mechanical points contact, holding timing accurately without routine maintenance.

For Jeep Dauntless 225 builders, this is one of the most direct HEI ignition upgrade paths available for the 1966–1971 CJ5, CJ6, Jeepster Commando, DJ5, and early Universal Truck applications using the 90° odd-fire V6. A slight intake manifold modification may be required for distributor clearance in Jeep applications. For 1975–1977 Buick passenger car applications, this distributor is a direct-fit replacement for the odd-fire 231 ignition system.

Both mechanical and vacuum advance are included, with a vacuum advance adjustment tool shipped with the distributor. Available in black finish only.

The Buick 90° Odd-Fire V6 — Two Eras, One Distributor
The Buick 90° V6 has two distinct odd-fire production eras. The first is the 225 CID (3.7L) Dauntless V6, sold by Buick to American Motors in 1965 and used in Jeep vehicles from 1966 through 1971 — including the CJ5, CJ6, Jeepster Commando, DJ5, Universal Truck, and Dispatcher. The second is the 231 CID (3.8L) odd-fire V6, reintroduced by Buick in 1975 and used across multiple GM divisions through the 1977 model year before GM transitioned to the even-fire crankshaft design. Both generations share the same 90° odd-fire architecture, and this HEI distributor covers both applications.

An HEI upgrade replaces the entire factory points and condenser system with an integrated coil, ignition module, and magnetic trigger in one sealed unit. The result is stronger spark, more accurate timing, and a system that requires no routine contact maintenance — a particularly meaningful improvement on older Jeep Dauntless V6 engines where points-style ignition components have often been in service for decades.

Performance Benefit
With 65,000 volts of integrated coil output and a magnetic pickup trigger, this HEI distributor fires spark plugs more reliably than a stock points setup across the full RPM range. Stronger, more consistent spark translates to easier cold starts, cleaner idle quality, and improved throttle response — especially noticeable on Jeep Dauntless builds and restored 1970s GM vehicles running carbureted ignition systems. Both mechanical and vacuum advance are included, and the vacuum advance adjustment tool allows the vacuum advance curve to be tuned to your specific application.
