Cadillac 429 V8 Pro Series Ready to Run Distributor
The TSP Pro Series Ready-to-Run Distributor for 1963–1965 Cadillac V8 applications covers both the 390 CID (6.4L) in its final production year (1963) and the 429 CID (7.0L) in its first two production years (1964–1965). Built on a machined aluminum housing with a circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger, this distributor provides accurate, repeatable ignition timing without the need for points, condenser, or a separate ignition control box.
Year range is critical for the Cadillac 429 product line. The Cadillac 429 CID was produced from 1964 through 1967, but TSP offers two separate distributors for this engine — one for 1963–1965 applications (this listing) and a separate unit for 1966–1967 applications (see the TSP 1966–1967 Cadillac 429 Pro Series distributor). If your Cadillac is a 1966 or 1967 model, the other listing is the correct unit for your application.
The Pro Series design uses an external ignition coil, giving you flexibility to run a coil matched to your build level. A minimum coil output of 35,000 volts is required — coil is not included. Three advance bushings and four advance springs are included, allowing the mechanical advance curve to be tailored to your engine's camshaft profile, compression ratio, and carburetor calibration. A vacuum advance block-off plate and tachometer output extension cable are also included.
The 1963–1965 Cadillac lineup powered by these engines includes the Series 62 (1963–1964), Calais (1965), Coupe de Ville, Sedan de Ville, Fleetwood 60 Special, Fleetwood 75 Limousine, Eldorado Biarritz, and Commercial Chassis — with the 390 serving the 1963 model year and the 429 taking over from 1964 forward.
Understanding the 1963–1965 Cadillac Engine Transition
The 1963 Cadillac marked the final year of the 390 CID (6.4L) V8, an engine that had powered the full Cadillac lineup since 1959. For 1964, Cadillac introduced the 429 CID (7.0L) as its replacement — a bored and stroked development of the same basic architecture — which remained in production through 1967. Both the 390 and the early 429 share compatible distributor architecture, making this distributor the correct upgrade for the complete 1963–1965 Cadillac V8 application window.
This distributor is the mid-era unit in TSP's three-part Cadillac 429-era distributor lineup. The 1963–1965 production window represents the transitional period between the 390 and the fully established 429 CID. For 1966–1967 Cadillac 429 applications, TSP offers a separate unit (available in male or female terminal cap versions) due to a design difference between early and late 429 production years.
Performance Benefit
The circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger deliver precise, repeatable spark timing without the wear and drift inherent in aging points-based ignition systems — a meaningful upgrade on sixty-plus-year-old ignition hardware. Three advance bushings and four advance springs allow full adjustment of the mechanical advance curve, which is particularly valuable on modified 390 or 429 builds running aftermarket camshafts or performance carburetors. A vacuum advance block-off plate is included for performance applications. A tachometer output extension cable simplifies aftermarket tach wiring.
