Chevy SBC/BBC V8 Small Cap Ready-to-Run Distributor

The TSP Small Cap Ready-to-Run Distributor for the Chevy SBC and BBC is a compact-cap electronic ignition upgrade for the Gen. I Chevrolet small block V8 (262–400 CID) and the standard-deck Mark IV big block V8 (396, 402, 427, and 454 CID) in carbureted applications. The defining advantage of this distributor over the TSP large-cap HEI and Pro Series units is the small cap design — a significantly more compact cap footprint that fits engine bays where a large-cap HEI distributor would interfere with the firewall, air cleaner, valve covers, or other components. This makes it the preferred distributor for vintage builds, pre-1975 cars, classic trucks, and any application where large-cap clearance is a problem.

The small cap design is particularly well established in 1955–1957 Chevrolet cars and trucks, early Camaros, and other builds where the engine sits close to the firewall. Where a large-cap HEI requires firewall modification or component relocation to fit, this small cap unit drops in cleanly without body or accessory modifications.

Inside, a multi-pole Hall Effect reluctor trigger replaces the points and condenser with a precise, maintenance-free electronic signal source. The Hall Effect system provides a cleaner, more consistent trigger signal than a traditional single-pole magnetic reluctor pickup — particularly at low RPM and during cold starts where precise cam position sensing improves ignition consistency. An external ignition coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher is required — coil is not included. No separate ignition control box or CDI unit is needed — the module is integrated into the distributor. Both mechanical and vacuum advance are included.

For builds where an integrated coil and single 12V wire is preferred, see the TSP Chevy HEI (JM6501). For builds requiring advance curve tuning with custom bushings and springs, a tachometer output, and a vacuum advance block-off plate, see the TSP Chevy Pro Series Ready-to-Run (JM7715).

Why Choose the Small Cap Ready-to-Run Over the Large-Cap HEI?
The large-cap HEI is the simplest Chevy ignition upgrade — integrated coil, single wire, drop-in replacement. But the large cap creates a real clearance problem in many classic and vintage applications. In 1955–1957 Chevrolets, early Camaros, and other builds where the engine sits close to the firewall or cowl, the large HEI cap physically contacts the firewall and requires modification to fit. This small cap Ready-to-Run solves that problem — the compact cap footprint clears tight engine bays that would require firewall modification with a large-cap HEI, without sacrificing electronic ignition performance. You still get a maintenance-free trigger, no points, no condenser, and mechanical and vacuum advance. The only difference is you supply an external coil (35,000V minimum), which gives you the flexibility to run a coil matched to your ignition system.

Three Chevy Distributor Options — Choosing the Right One
TSP offers three distinct distributor designs for the carbureted Chevy SBC and BBC:
The HEI (JM6501) is the simplest option — large cap, integrated coil, single 12V wire, no external coil needed. Best for straightforward street and restoration builds where cap clearance is not a concern.
This Small Cap Ready-to-Run (JM6701) is the compact option — small cap for tight engine bays, Hall Effect trigger, external coil required. Best for pre-1975 cars, vintage builds, and any application where the large HEI cap won't fit cleanly.
The Pro Series Ready-to-Run (JM7715) is the performance tuning option — large cap, external coil, advance tuning kit with bushings and springs, vacuum advance block-off plate, tachometer output cable. Best for performance builds where the advance curve needs to be matched to a specific camshaft, compression ratio, and carburetor calibration.

Hall Effect Trigger — What It Is and Why It Matters
The multi-pole Hall Effect reluctor in this distributor differs from both a traditional single-pole magnetic reluctor and the optical trigger in the LT1 Opti-Spark. A Hall Effect sensor uses a semiconductor chip that generates a precise square-wave trigger signal in response to changes in a magnetic field from a multi-pole reluctor wheel. The multi-pole design provides a higher-resolution signal than a single-pole unit — particularly beneficial for low-RPM precision and clean signal delivery at cold start. The Hall Effect system is also more durable than a traditional magnetic pickup and requires no routine maintenance over the life of the distributor.
